20/20 is an hour-long American television news magazine program hosted by
Elizabeth Vargas and
John Stossel on the ABC network. The
Roone Arledge creation premiered in 1978 with original hosts
Robert Hughes and Harold Hayes. After receiving abysmal reviews, Hughes and Hayes were replaced by
Hugh Downs, who was later joined by
Barbara Walters. Both network news heavyweights, Downs and Walters lent their substantial credibility to the program and the show thrived.
Known for its eclectic programming, each week 20/20 features a variety of stories including celebrity profiles, investigative reports, current events, science and technology. The program and its format have been so successful that two spin-offs have resulted, 20/20 Downtown and Primetime Monday, both now canceled.
In 2009, 20/20 received Qantas Media Award nominations for Best Current Affairs Reporting and Best Current Affairs Camera. The show won the highly regarded Peabody Award twice, in 1996 and 2000. Over the years, the program has also received nine GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding TV Journalism.
