American Idol is a long running reality series, based on having contestants sing for judges and then be slowly eliminated until the final contestant remaining is dubbed the winner, receiving a recording contract. The show is hosted by
Ryan Seacrest and the judges have changed over the years, but originally were
Simon Cowell,
Paula Abdul, and
Randy Jackson. Current and other former judges include
Kara DioGuardi,
Ellen DeGeneres,
Steven Tyler (present), and
Jennifer Lopez (present).
It has been the number one show on television for quite some time, breaking records and surpassing previous shows, and seems to continue growing. One key component of American Idol is having the television audience vote for who they think should win by texting. This has worked to involve the audience and make the show more interactive, which is part of it's massive success.
It is very likely that American Idol will continue to be on our TV screens, despite any changes to cast or judges, because the concept works so well and is so entertaining. Past winners of the show include
Taylor Hicks,
Jordin Sparks,
David Cook,
Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, and
Carrie Underwood to name a few.
