Charles in Charge was a family comedy that aired starting in 1984 and lasted for 5 seasons. It was a comedy about a family, which was originally the Pembrokes, who needed someone to watch their children and take care of their home while they were at work.
Charles, who was played by
Scott Baio, was a college student who needed a place to stay and took the job as a live in caretaker for the Pembroke children. Charles in Charge was very lucky to even make it to a second season, as the ratings were very low. Season 2 had the Pembrokes move out and the Powells move in, and this proved to be a critical move in making Charles in Charge one of the more enjoyable comedies of its time. We never really got to know much about the whereabouts of Mr. Powell, but the rest of the Powell family really turned the show around. The mother was played by
Sandra Kerns, who usually would only make spot appearances. The main characters besides Charles and his friend Buddy were the kids. Adam was played by
Alexander Polinsky, Sarah was played by
Josie Davis, and Jamie was played by Nicole Eggert.
The best character may have been Willie Ames' character, Charles' dimwitted college friend Buddy. Buddy always seemed to be doing something which required Charles' assistance, and the results were usually hysterical.
Charles in Charge was a series that may have ended before it's time, and if you enjoy family comedies you would likely enjoy seasons two through five of this show.
