After eight successful seasons, Scrubs creator and showrunner Bill Lawrence decided it was time to move on to his next project. That project turned out to be Cougar Town, a comedy starring former Friends star Courtney Cox as a recent divorcee in a small Florida Town. The show originally centered around Cox's character Jules Cobb and her misadventures while dating younger men, but Cougar Town quickly evolved into an ensemble comedy as Lawrence and the writers recognized the undeniable chemistry between the seven primary cast members.

On the show, Jules lives at home with her son Travis while her carefree ex-husband Bobby moves onto a boat after the divorce. Across the street from Jules are Jules' devilish best friend Ellie Torres and Ellie's goofy, Bobby-obsessed husband Andy. New to the group are Grayson Ellis, another recent divorcee in the neighborhood determined to enjoy the single life, and Laurie Keller, Jules' ditzy young coworker. Together, the self-proclaimed "Cul de Sac Crew" spend a little too much time in Jules' house drinking wine and gossiping.

Like Lawrence's former program Scrubs, Cougar Town stands out for its ability to combine off-the-wall comedy with genuine, heartfelt moments. The show balances clever slapstick humor with subtle jokes that can last throughout episodes and even throughout entire seasons and unlike many comedies Cougar Town emphasizes character development alongside the laughter, making it easy to grow attached to the characters as you watch. Critical support and ratings are growing for this surprisingly sincere and refreshing show.
