Just Shoot Me is an ensemble comedy following the lives of the staff of the fictional fashion magazine Blush. The show begins with the main character, Maya Gallo, a serious broadcast journalist played by
Laura San Giacomo, losing her job at a TV station for making a co-worker cry. She reluctantly goes to work for Blush, a top New York fashion magazine, which is owned by her father Jack Gallo (played by George Segal). Neo-feminist Maya immediately butts heads with her father over the fluffy nature of the magazine, which she thinks should be more feminist and modern.
Maya also finds her protests over the magazine's objectification of women at odds with some of Blush's other staff members, which include a neurotic ex-supermodel turned alcoholic and fashion editor Nina Van Horn (
Wendie Malick), quirky and sex-obsessed executive assistant Dennis Quimby Finch (
David Spade), photographer and sometime boyfriend of Maya Elliot DiMauro (Enrico Colatoni), and style guru and hairdresser Vicki Costa (Rena Sofer). While the show started out as primarily comedic, as Just Shoot Me continued, some of the shows became more serious and focused on the relationships between the characters, climaxing in Jack handing the magazine over to Maya in the final episode.
Just Shoot Me also often featured guest actors, including Steve Carrell, Rebecca Romjin, and
Ray Liotta. Originally airing from 1997 to 2003, Just Shoot Me won a number of awards, including four BMI Film and TV Awards and seven Golden Globe Nominations and three Emmy nominations.
