Leverage is a series currently airing on TNT. It premiered in 2008 and stars Academy Award winner
Timothy Hutton as Nate Ford, a former insurance investigator who assembles a team of thieves to get back at his former employers for refusing medical treatment to his son. The thieves include
Gina Bellman as grifter, Sophie Deveraux, a dismal actress…except for when she's stealing something.
Christian Kane plays the muscle, Eliot Spencer, a man who can kill anyone with anything.
Beth Riesgraf plays Parker, the insane thief with only one name. Rounding out the cast is
Aldis Hodge as hacker, Alec Hardison, often the funniest and most charming of the bunch.
The group initially forms to punish Nate's former company – because sometimes bad guys make the best good guys – and was supposed to dissolve afterwards, but they find they have a taste for doing good for the world. The show is essentially a modern-day Robin Hood with our heroes stealing from the rich to give back to those they exploited. They "provide leverage," as the opening montage reminds viewers. Each episode revolves around taking down some bad guy, involving thievery, cons, and a whole host of illegal activity, all in the service of good.
Sometimes cheesy and defying belief, the real heart of the show is the interaction between the characters. Nate and Sophie play the Mom and Dad to the three 'kids' and their familial bickering is comic gold. A sense of fun pervades the show, providing a feel-good story that doesn't take itself too seriously.
