The legend of Merlin comes to life in this BBC series. Inspired by American hit Smallville and set in England around 927, Merlin follows the adventures of a young and talented apprentice who discovers he has magical powers. Upon arriving at the city of Camelot, he discovers his magic at a time when King Uther Pendragon, a volatile character, has just banished the supernatural from happening.
Merlin becomes an apprentice to Gaius, the court physician and one of the few who knows his secret. It isn't until he finds the Last Dragon, enslaved under the city, when Merlin discovers his calling to protect the King's son, Arthur. Prince Arthur turns out to be an arrogant and adventurous character. Despite acrimony between him and Merlin, the two form a friendship that prevails in life and death situations.
When in a predicament, Merlin goes to The Great Dragon, who knows his destiny yet cannot reveal it in whole.
Other characters include Morgana, the King's adopted child and daughter of his late best friend who also has tremendous powers. Gwen, Morgana's servant, is apprehensive and friendly but often combative with Arthur. She and Morgana form a strong friendship despite their class difference. Nimueh is a beautiful and powerful sorceress who attempts to overthrow King Uther and stop Arthur from becoming King.
The series often differs from the myth yet resembles it with caution. While offering a blend of adventure and comedy, Merlin remains a fairy tale at heart.
