Based on the book series by L.J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries chronicles the teenage life of Elena Gilbert. Elena may be a simple human, but she is surrounded by the supernatural with her best friend Bonnie Bennett who learns she is a witch and the Salvatore brothers who are vampires destined to be teenagers for eternity.

Getting over the death of their parents, Elena and Jeremy Gilbert plan on getting back to the normal activities of school but are quickly caught off guard with new student Stefan Salvatore, a vampire who is determined to blend in with humans by not drinking The Blood of his fellows. Elena is immediately drawn to Stefan and though Elena discovers Stefan is a vampire, her feelings continue to grow.

Complications ensue when the second Salvatore brother, Damon, enters the picture. Unlike his brother, Damon still feeds on human blood and begins causing suspicion as instances of attacks occur. Luckily, Stefan has special powers and can erase memories to avoid anyone pointing the finger at Damon, but how long can Stefan keep this charade up?

Not your typical teen drama, The Vampire Diaries goes beyond the superficial and delves into the supernatural with smart writing and surprising story development. With strong female characters like Elena, The Vampire Diaries sets a welcomed tone for young adolescents.
