The second project I have been working on is a game-derived piece called Winning. With this piece I wanted to examine and dissect the dynamic of Counter-Strike: Source, a hugely popular Online-FPS). Having played this game on and off for nearly ten years, I realized very early that contrary to other FPS''s there is no story line, no plot. Nothing of substance besides one of two map-based objectives and/or the elimination of the other team. The dynamic is one of complete cyclical violence within changing environments. I quickly saw that situation mattered very little and that the act of virtual violence was key. I thus decided to make the most simplistic, basic environment I could think of: a small, unadorned two person room. I started to look at the widespread fascination with the game, which also reflected my own. There are a dizzying myriad of sub-cultures connected to CS:S: modders, skinners, mappers, clans, even semi-professional gaming leagues who receive corporate sponsorship(13). There are people from all facets of life that play this game, not just those from a pseudo-military background. I was in the Marines for a couple of years. I trained to be a machine-gunner in the infantry, but halfway through I woke-up to the reality of my situation. I realized what I was allowing myself to be used for and decided that I couldn't live with that, so I sought a discharge. I am not a violent person, but I have seen within myself the capacity for an unthinking violence that simultaneously scares and fascinates me. Violence, it could be argued, is one of the heritages of humanity. This game acts as a window for me (and others) to approach this capacity in a socially and physically safe manner.
