An 18-year-old was killed in a crash at Kansas Highway 32 and Kansas Highway 7 late Friday morning. The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the teenager as Mark A. Holmes, of Bonner Springs. Friends said Holmes was known as "Tony No Legs" because he had his legs amputated below the knees due to a childhood illness. Authorities said Holmes was a front-seat passenger in a 2002 Nissan that collided with a 1997 Ford pickup truck at about 11:30 a.m. The Highway Patrol said the 18-year-old driver of the car was trying to make a left turn onto the K-7 northbound ramp when the wreck happened. Holmes died at the scene. The driver of the car, identified as Chad Michael Way, was rushed to a Topeka hospital in critical condition. A third passenger, Daniel Earl Perkins II, 17, was taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital. The Highway Patrol said no one in the car was wearing a seat belt. The 40-year-old driver of the pickup was taken to a hospital. He is expected to recover. Holmes was featured on KMBC in 2002 in a story about his illness and amputation. Friends said they were shocked by the news of his death. "When they said it was Tony No Legs, all mouths dropped," friend John McFaul told KMBC's Dan Weinbaum. "He was the nicest kid you'd ever meet." Police are investigating the crash.
