Band of Brothers was a very popular miniseries that aired on TV during 2001. It was a one season, 10 episode show which followed the training, fighting, and lifestyles of the East Company of the US Army 101st Airborne Division. It took place during WWII and also covered the East Company's European combat missions. The missions covered included Operation Overlord through V-J Day.
Band of Brothers is based on the book with the same name which was written by historian
Stephen Ambrose. The series is based on interviews and research done by Ambrose, but a lot of creative freedoms were used when producing the TV show. It still provides a great look at WWII and can be described as an action packed and emotional adventure.
HBO was the original home for Band of Brothers, but many networks are now playing repeat episodes. The executive producers were
Steven Spielberg and
Tom Hanks. There were numerous characters who played roles in the 10 episodes, but some of the most notable are TSgt. Donald Malarkey played by
Scott Grimes, Major Richard D. Winters played by
Damian Lewis, Capt. Lewis Nixon played by
Ron Livingston, Cpl. Eugene Row played by
Shane Taylor, and C. Carwood Lipton played by
Donnie Wahlberg.
The fantastic story lines and great characters won Band of Brothers numerous awards. Most notable of these awards are the 19 Emmy nominations and 6 Emmy wins. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries as well as the Golden Globe for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture made for Television.
