Battlestar Galactica was a 1970's era American science fiction television show. It stayed on the air for two seasons. The basic plot involved a lone space battleship named the Galactica, and a "rag tag fleet of survivors" who were hoping to find Earth. While searching the galaxy for Earth, a mythic place in their cultures history, they were constantly harried and harrassed by a group of robot-like cylons, intent on killing all humans. Battlestar Galactica was particularly fanciful in that it married a swashbuckling, fighter pilot style with a unique science fiction story. Actors such as
Dirk Benedict and
Lorne Greene were involved in the series. Many of the character names became quite well known in the lexicon of the English culture, most notably Starbuck, played by Benedict, Admiral Adama, played by Greene, Apollo and Boomer; the main characters in the series.
Battlestar Galactica was remade and re-imagined by writer/producer
Ronald D. Moore in the early 2000's. In Moore's story many of the more popular characters remained, but a degree of verisimiltude was added. The same basic plot of a lone space battleship trying to find Earth remained, but many new aspects were added as well. Cylons, robots in the original series, became human looking androids and robotic spaceships in this new version. Starbuck, Apollo, Boomer and Admiral Adama all were still in evidence, but Starbuck and Boomer, both played by male actors in the original, were played by females in the new version of Battlestar Galactica.
