Part sitcom and part musical, HBO’s comedy Flight of the Conchords is a hilarious look at the lives of two New Zealand natives trying to make it in New York. Created by and starring
Bret McKenzie and
Jemaine Clement, Flight of the Conchords follows Bret and Jemaine playing fictionalized versions of themselves, and their band, aptly named “Flight of the Conchords”. The series follows their hilarious exploits not only in trying to “make it” as a band, but also in their personal lives; meeting women, living as foreigners in New York, and struggling just to pay the rent on their apartment.
Flight of the Conchords also features band manager Murray (
Rhys Darby), pawn shop owner Dave (
Arj Barker), and their biggest (and only) fan, Mel (Kristen Schaal). Murray manages
The Band, trying (and failing) to get them lucrative gigs, while Dave offers his off-beat brand of wisdom whenever possible. Mel has a (unrequited) crush on both members of
The Band, and in addition to supporting
The Band, stalks both Bret and Jemaine in all of their personal affairs as well. The series also features many guest appearances, including
Greg Proops,
Aziz Ansari, and Will Forte.
Running for only two seasons from 2007-2009, Flight of the Conchords also received much critical acclaim. The series has won many awards and nominations, including an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Comedy Series.” Most notably,
The Band won the Grammy for “Best Comedy Album” for their EP “The Distant Future,” featuring music from the show.
