Off the Map is a new series by Jenna Bans that began airing in January of 2011. An existential medical drama about seven doctors in the wilds of the South American jungle, it explores the psyche of each one as they struggle to come to terms with their lives and to understand what drew them to this vocation in the first place. Along with Bans, the series is crafted by Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes, who collaborated on Grey's Anatomy.
The main characters on Off the Map include Dr. Benjamin Keeton (
Martin Henderson), a man renowned for his humanitarian spirit; Dr. Otis Cole (Jason Wintston George), a borderline goofball who struggles with drugs and has a crush on one of his fellow doctors; Dr. Tommy Fuller (
Zach Gilford), a party animal and ladies' man; Dr. Ryan Clark (Rachel Lefevre), who had an unusual upbringing that led to her acquiring a dangerous heart condition; Dr. Mina Minnard (
Mamie Gummer), who is haunted by a past medical mistake and who doesn't work well with others; and "Zee" Alvarez (
Valerie Cruz), who looks after the rest of the doctors.
The ABC show, which is filmed in Hawaii, has received high ratings thus far, and there will be 13 episodes total in the first season. Of the actors, the one with the most recognizable face for most television viewers is Gilford, who had a starring role on the NBC series Friday Night Lights and now has a chance to shine on Off the Map.
